There is a significant training and competency gap for Hot Works related maintenance tasks.
1) There has been no formal industry best-practice training available that is specifically tailored for Supervisors who may not have a relevant trade-based background.
2) Generic hot work safety training and manufacturing based safety guides and standards simply do not identify and address hot work hazards relevant to maintenance tasks. For example, there are 5 Material Unwanted Events (MUE's) and a combination of more than 40 hazards that may be present, as well as technical risks that may be created.
This specialized Hot Works Safety Management Training is designed to address these gaps and meet the needs of risk owners and supervisors who are responsible for maintenance based hot work tasks.
The Hot Works Safety Management Training courses have been designed to support Supervisors, Superintendents and Managers in meeting their responsibilities and legislative requirements, and is aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF 4 to 6). it is applicable to
The training is specifically designed for mine sites and quarries, and provides a means of demonstrating regulatory compliance with industry guidelines such as the NSW TRG Hot Work (Cutting and Welding) and state based legislation such as QLD Recognised Standard 22. However, it is also valuable to all industries where there is maintenance based welding activities.
The self-paced eLearning courses are based on practical, real-world applications focussing on maintenance tasks involving welding, cutting and grinding. Specific topics the training covers include:
Understanding Hot Work: Identifying various hot work activities and tasks.
Hot Work Safety Management System (HWSMS): Key aspects of implementation and operation, including legislative requirements, supervision, and permit systems.
Material Unwanted Events (MUEs): Learning about hot work-related MUEs (e.g., fire, explosion, structural collapse, electric shock, chronic health risks) and their critical controls.
Hot Work Hazards & Controls: In-depth understanding of the four classes of hot work-related hazards and their corresponding controls.
Technical Risk Management: Insights into technical risk and its control.
Core Controls: Essential controls for effective hot work hazard management.
The Risk Owner course can be completed in an hour or less, depending on how much detail you want. The risk owner course includes the full content of the Supervisor course so you can see what they will learn. A certificate of completion is provided.
The Supervisor course takes approximately 3hrs to complete all learning activities and assessment tasks. A certificate is awarded on successful completion of the course and assessment
These courses are self paced delivery, so they can be done in small bites and at any time. This makes them perfect for shift based workers and busy managers.
This courses are an industry first and play an important role in supporting industry to improve maintenance based Hot Works Safety Management through improved awareness of the various hazards and understanding of what effective controls need to be in place.
Importantly, these course support mines and quarries in addressing hot work related Material Unwanted Events (MUE's) and meeting Supervisor competency requirements. (eg RS22)
